Getting ready for your Puppy class

What to bring

Before your class starts with your puppy you need to identify what is your puppies favourite treat. We use food rewards in our class as one way of rewarding your dog. This food needs to be “high value food” which means it needs to be something that is very yummy and very special that they only get at times of training in a high distraction environment. Treats to be used for example is bacon, devon, cheese, roast chicken, hot dog, ham, etc. What not to bring is things like dry dog food, liver treats, schmakos, etc. The food only needs to be the size of your little finger nail, we want the puppy to get a taste of it but it is swallowed pretty quick as opposed to getting a meal out of one treat.

We need you to identify what is your puppies favourite toy preferably not a ball or a squeak toy and bring this to class too. You want to be able to play with your puppy with this toy so needs to be an interactive toy you can play a tug game with easily. If you wish to buy a new toy for your puppy then please have a few games with your puppy before bringing it to class so your puppy has a value already in the toy.

Having the right type of equipment is really important, your collar needs to be the correct size for your puppy and the lead needs to be a normal sized lead not a retractable lead. Please ensure your lead is in good condition and has no tears or frays in it. Please ensure you have comfortable clothing and footwear on and a treat pouch / bum bag or sandwich bag to put your treats for your puppies into. Each week you will need to bring your puppies bed/mat/towel for your puppy to sit on as this will give your puppy somewhere to go when we are talking to you in the class.

*** Important Please Do Not Feed Your Puppies Before Class *** Your puppies need to be hungry for class time. Any breakfast needs to be fed to your puppies by 6am to ensure they are hopefully hungry again before class time
